Interview: Jovana Skuletic, Architect – Gray International

At Gray International, interior design is conceived as far more than the arrangement of walls, materials, and furnishings. It is the art of creating spaces where functionality, timeless aesthetics, and uncompromising comfort exist in seamless balance, spaces that reflect both refined taste and the individuality of those who inhabit them.

In a world shaped by fleeting trends and carefully curated digital imagery, Gray International remains committed to something more enduring: harmony between people and place. For the studio, a successful interior is not defined by what is fashionable in the moment, but by whether it continues to feel authentic, intuitive, and deeply personal over time.

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Architect and Interior Designer Mrs. Jovana Skuletic and to visit one of the residential projects she holds especially close to her heart. Through conversation and experience, it became clear that her approach embodies the very philosophy the studio stands for: an approach rooted in dialogue, empathy, and a profound respect for the lives unfolding within the spaces she designs.

Inspiration Rooted in Experience and Dialogue

For Jovana, inspiration begins with observation and lived experience, but above all, with the client. She believes that the true success of an interior lies in whether the person who will call it home can genuinely recognize themselves in it. Buildings, she often reflects, possess a soul, and it is within the interior that this soul reveals itself most intimately. Hidden from the public eye, it is here that architecture becomes personal, requiring sensitivity, understanding, and intention.

Her work is guided by the idea that design should give form to character—both of the space and of the people who inhabit it,always enriched by a subtle yet distinctive creative signature. It is this balance of personal expression and disciplined refinement that defines not only her projects, but the wider vision of Gray International.

Learning from Experience, Rethinking the Dialogue

From her senior colleagues, Jovana has learned to honor the creative process and never treat it as a mechanical nine-to-five routine. Architecture shapes the quality of everyday life; it is the framework within which families grow, children are raised, and memories are formed. It demands patience, dedication, and care.

What she admires most is that, even after decades of practice, her senior colleagues retain the same enthusiasm and creative spark. For her, that enduring passion is one of the most valuable lessons any young architect can carry forward.

If she were to approach anything differently, it would be the emphasis on client education. In an era shaped by curated images and aspirational feeds, often fueled by platforms such as Pinterest, expectations can easily drift away from reality, particularly when it comes to budgets. Establishing clarity from the outset, she believes, is essential to building trust and creating meaningful results.

A Creative Process That Begins with People

Every project begins with conversation. Jovana wants to know what music her client listens to, whether they gravitate toward films or books, how they spend their free time, and which corner of the home they naturally inhabit most. These personal details, she says, often account for eighty percent of the design. Only by understanding what truly matters to someone can she create a stage upon which their life can unfold.

Jovana sees residential interiors as small, living museums of a family. And a museum, she notes, never goes out of style. When a space is approached thoughtfully, without blindly following trends, the result is timeless design: an environment that endures, that resists fatigue, and ultimately offers long-term value. Early, well-considered decisions prevent costly complications later, making a reflective approach not only aesthetically responsible but economically wise.

After defining stylistic direction, often navigating the visual references clients bring to the table, the conversation turns to finances. She half-jokingly refers to this stage as a “psychological session,” where desires, possibilities, and practical realities are carefully aligned.

Throughout the design phase, she organizes brief meetings and encourages all members of the household to participate. Balancing diverse needs can be the greatest challenge, but once harmony is achieved, the rest of the process flows naturally. Her deepest motivation comes in the moment she recognizes that a space truly belongs to the people it was created for.

A Project That Became a Complete Story

One project, in particular, stands out. What began as a conceptual proposal evolved into a full realization, from selecting materials and furnishings to the finest details: cutlery, glassware, linens, and decorative accents.

Given the complexity of execution, coordinating on-site teams and external collaborators—direct involvement was essential to avoid delays and unnecessary costs. As the apartment gradually took shape, the client increasingly entrusted her with decisions, often saying, “Let’s add this,” or “You’ll choose better.”

The challenge was never to design according to her own preferences, but to make choices exactly as the client would, only more precisely, more confidently, and more thoughtfully. The experience taught her the importance of deeply understanding a client’s mindset, habits, rhythm, and aesthetic instincts, so that decisions made on their behalf would still feel entirely their own.

The ultimate goal was simple: for the client to walk in, pause, and say, “Wow, this is my home.” Ideally, nothing would be missing, except perhaps a suitcase waiting to be unpacked.

    A Bridge Between Generations

Looking ahead, Jovana sees young architects playing a vital role in the continued evolution of Gray International in Montenegro. They bring freshness, new energy, and openness to contemporary tools and technologies that are reshaping the way architecture is conceived and communicated.

Guided by the mentorship and experience of senior colleagues, young professionals can strike a delicate balance between innovation and tradition. For a studio that seeks to grow while remaining true to its core values, this balance is essential.

In her view, the younger generation represents a bridge between eras, an engine of new ideas and, at the same time, guardians of the authentic approach that has distinguished Gray on Montenegro’s architectural scene for years.
