Architecture and interior design have been around for centuries, constantly changing over
time, driven by technological advancements and cultural shifts. They shape the areas that
surround us and together they transform empty spaces into living works of art.
We had the pleasure of interviewing an architect and interior designer, owner of N/ARH Studio in Podgorica – Nikola Popović, and hearing a bit about his journey, passion, and the creative process that drives his work
MAG. by Lifestyle: How would you describe yourself as a person, both professionally and personally?
Nikola Popović: It’s definitely one of the most challenging questions for me. If I look at
myself through my profession, it’s a conflict of personalities. On one hand, there’s the part
that strives to please the client, while on the other, I aim to set a new standard with each
project, pushing the boundaries of architectural expression and vision.
In my personal life, I consider myself a simple person and a pragmatist at heart.
MAG. by Lifestyle: Architecture seems to be deeply ingrained in your identity. Could you tell us more about your journey into this field and when did you decide that you wanted to be an architect?
Nikola Popović: Architecture has always been my calling. It’s interesting that a few years
ago, my parents found an essay from elementary school where I wrote about architecture as
my future profession. And I must say that if I hadn’t succeeded in enrolling in architecture,
my backup option was sailing.
Through my grandfather Danilo, who was involved in supplying ships at the Port of Bar, I developed a love for them, and I can freely say that a part of me fantasised about sailing. However, as the years pass, I consider architecture to be a significant part of my identity and my great love. In fact, recently, I’ve been receiving criticism from my closest friends that I spend more time on architecture than with them.
I’m definitely sure that I came into this world with the intention of being an architect.
MAG. by Lifestyle: Your dedication to your craft is admirable. Do you have any projects that stand out and that you are especially proud of?
Nikola Popović: As a self-critic, I don’t consider any project a significant achievement,
although I am proud of each one. Every compliment about my unique approach to design
and the specificity of my work is appreciated, but I believe my time is yet to come.
We’ve recently worked on some exciting projects that will soon see the light of day, and I hope they will be the ones I can talk about. Since I personally devote myself to every project, as does the rest of my team, there isn’t a particular project I would highlight at the moment. I’d rather leave it to people to be positive or negative critics of my work.
MAG. by Lifestyle: How would you describe your design style?
Nikola Popović: I can’t say that I have a specific style, except for the desire to create
something new and extraordinary. Generally, my colleagues and I operate on the principle of
adapting the style to the client’s wishes while striving to add our authentic touch.
In just two years of independent work, I’ve managed to become recognizable in our local market, and I hope to expand beyond the borders of Montenegro in the future.
MAG. by Lifestyle: How would you describe your interactions with clients and what was your most interesting experience?
Nikola Popović: It’s hard to pick one most interesting experience with clients because there
have been many. Mostly positive experiences. Being a communicative person who enjoys
making new acquaintances, I’m glad that my profession allows me to meet people with
different desires and characters.
It’s an indescribable feeling when clients appreciate my work, and even after the project is completed, we remain in contact.
MAG. by Lifestyle: What do you find most rewarding about interior design and architecture?
Nikola Popović: The beauty of designing interiors or architecture lies in paying attention to
the smallest details. The symbiosis of function and form, along with careful material
selection, makes a project perfect.
The essence of this profession is that we as individuals are transient, but our work remains behind as a testament to our creativity and an indelible mark of the period in which we lived and created.
MAG. by Lifestyle: How do you spend your time when you are not in the office?
Nikola Popović: When I’m not at the office, I spend time with my family or friends. I’m not a
big fan of staying indoors or watching television, so whenever I can, I spend time outdoors,
whether it’s taking a walk, going to Bobija (Lake Skadar), or spending time at the vineyard.
MAG. by Lifestyle: How do you see yourself in the future?
Nikola Popović: Primarily, I see myself as a good husband and an even better father, and
through my profession, I strive to be the best version of myself every day.
Definitely, I’m looking forward to having more people in the office who will approach architecture with the same passion and together with me, push the boundaries of Montenegrin architecture through our creativity.
As we peer into the mind of a conceptual interior designer, we notice his passion and love
that drives him to be creative, innovative, and constantly push boundaries in his field.
His dedication to his craft and his ability to adapt to clients’ needs, while still maintaining
authenticity, definitely sets him apart in the ever-evolving world of design.
