When products and technologies emerge, where’s the best place to introduce them to the world?
In the case of phones, which have become indispensable tools for personal communication and work, their first public appearance can be traced back to 1876 at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition—the global fair we now know as The World Expo.
Almost a century later, wireless phones made their debut at Expo 1970 Osaka, alongside other groundbreaking innovations like electric cars, moving sidewalks, and the rise of family restaurants.
The World Expo, dating back to the mid-19th century, offers an unparalleled international stage for showcasing the most significant economic, technological, social, and cultural achievements of participating nations. As competition intensifies globally, these expos provide governments and their partners with a unique opportunity to strengthen international networks and present their countries as competitive destinations in strategically important areas.
And indeed, Osaka Expo 1970 stands out as a symbol of Japan’s rapid economic growth and one of the country’s most celebrated events.
Now, twenty years after the Aichi Expo 2005, Expo 2025 Osaka-Kansai will once again bring the international community back to Japan. Taking place from April 13 to October 13, and expecting an estimated 28 million visitors over six months, Expo 2025 promises to be a vibrant melting pot of ideas, innovations, and cultural exchanges.
Expo 2025 will tackle emerging social issues such as inequality and conflicts, and explore advancements in science and technology like AI and biotechnology driving Society 5.0—a concept aiming to integrate the real and virtual worlds to solve social problems and foster economic development. Additionally, it will address the consequences of longevity.
“Now that we have developed advanced science that can even modify life itself, we are required to sincerely recognize our status as part of overall ecosystems and take action to open up a brighter future utilizing science and technology of our own making with a keen awareness of our responsibility.” (Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition)
The theme “Designing Future Society For Our Lives“ underscores the creation of a sustainable society where individuals can pursue their desired lifestyles and maximize potential, promoting international collaboration.
This Expo presents an ideal opportunity for humanity, amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, to reaffirm its potential and propose new forms of life and society. Furthermore, the venue is regarded as a crucial platform for reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
“We should live in this world while recognising the universal and different characteristics of diverse forms of life in the natural world, developing our sympathy for others and respecting diverse cultures and values.” (Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition)
Montenegro’s participation in Expo 2025 marks its fifth appearance on this prestigious global platform. From its debut as the Principality of Montenegro at the Liege Expo in 1905 to its upcoming presence in Osaka, the country has continuously embraced the opportunity to showcase its rich heritage and promising future to the world.
Under the shared pavilion type C, alongside Croatia, Slovenia, San Marino, Panama, Uruguay, and Gabon, Montenegro will present its unique blend of tradition and modernity. This participation signifies a commitment to strengthening international and economic relations, particularly with Japan, focusing on enhancing economic cooperation through tourism and investment.
Beyond the vibrant exhibits and interactive displays, Montenegro’s presence at Expo 2025 is intertwined with a remarkable story of friendship and collaboration with Japan that spans over 140 years.
The most notable example is found in a cultural exchange that emerged from translating the seminal works of Petar II Petrović Njegoš into Japanese. This exchange, which shared appreciation for tradition, morality, and freedom, served as a bridge between these two distant nations.
Speaking about this process, Professor Dr. Sonja Tomović Šundić emphasized that culture, language, and poetry serve as the most potent means of forging connections between peoples.
Concept 2025
Montenegro’s concept at Expo 2025 will revolve around the subtheme “Connecting
Lives,” emphasizing the values of coexistence and diversity preservation.
Moreover, it would be an excellent opportunity for Montenegro to showcase its multicultural identity and share knowledge during The Them Weeks. This initiative of using the venue as a platform for resolving global issues was intoduced by Expo Dubai 2020.
This time, as it was announced, not only the organizers but also Official Participants, the Japanese government and local governments, participants in Co-Creation Projects, Expo participants such as exhibiting companies, and local governments and industries from across Japan – will all gather to discuss solutions in a “dialogue program” and “business exchange” for concrete action.
Through an integrated exhibition and program, Montenegro aims to highlight the importance of balancing social, evironmental, and economic development.
Integral to Montenegro’s Expo participation is the cultural aspect, which serves as a cornerstone of its identity.
From showcasing traditional music and dance performances to celebrating its culinary heritage, Montenegro’s cultural offerings will captivate visitors and foster deeper cultural exchanges.
The National Day of Montenegro at Expo 2025 will be a celebration of the country’s rich cultural tradition, featuring a diverse array of events and performances.
Preparations for Expo participation present numerous challenges, from conceptualizing engaging exhibits to managing logistical complexities.
Nevertheless, Montenegro’s Expo team, composed of experienced professionals and newcomers alike, is dedicated to ensuring memorable and impactful presence on the global stage.
Looking ahead, Montenegro anticipates significant outcomes from its participation in Expo 2025.
Beyond strengthening ties with Japan and enhancing bilateral relations, the Expo offers a unique opportunity to position Montenegro as a prime tourist destination for Japan’s affluent travelers seeking new experiences in Europe.
As Montenegro prepares to weave its narrative of tradition and progress at Expo 2025, the world eagerly anticipates the unveiling of its pavilion—a testament to the country’s enduring spirit and vibrant culture on the global stage.
